about

The seeds of this album were sewn by my friend the late James Cruikshank who paid the rent on his flat under the local church hall by maintaining the organ and playing it for the congregation. He became fascinated by the church's acoustics and began recording there at night. He suggested (insisted) that I come and record there too. I had to go alone late at night. He'd set up the recorder and leave the church key in a shoe on his verandah for me. He asked me not to turn any lights on because he didn't want his landlords to find out their church was moonlighting as a recording studio. There was a faint glow through the stained glass and occasionally distant headlights would illuminate a huge mural of Jesus on the cross which stretched across the wall above me. Otherwise it was dark. I would feel for the machine, press record and play as long as my concentration lasted. He then edited the files and returned them to me with instructions - "improvise more" … "play with the sound of the space" etc.

Unfortunately my post-production team (Josh Bell) deemed that the quality of the church recordings was not releasable. This album was recorded at Shady Rest - alone in low light. The reverberation, echo and Leslie speaker effects were created at the time of recording to make them part of the music.
